The show started out as a radio drama, as listeners of old time radio can attest, with William Conrad voicing the part of Dillon. In the middle part of the 1950′s the decision was made to take the show and make a television series of it. his who had worked for his Batjac production company named James Arness. At Wayne's encouragement, Arness took the role and a legend was born. To help the show, Wayne appeared in an introduction of the first episode.
