Info on old time radio shows?

I love old time radio dramas. Especially Gunsmoke, Dragnet, and Suspense. I’m looking for some books and documentaries on how they were made, and how sound effects were created, the stars and production staff and their history. Suggestions please?

What is your take on Kennedy talks about the fight for immigration reform?

The El PiolĂn radio show, the most popular Spanish-language radio show in America (strike that – see the update below – it is the most popular radio show in any language nationwide), with millions of listeners in California and nationwide, gave a BIG buildup for Teddy at 7:40 a.m. California time with a three minute pre-produced bio calling him “the best senator in America” highlighting Kennedy family history and his leadership on education, health care and immigration reform. Here are my notes:

- Teddy comes on, jokes that after hearing that he wants to come on the show every day after hearing the intro. Says he’s challenging Arnold Schwarzenneger (a McCain supporter and Kennedy in-law) to an arm wrestling contest to decide which – Obama or McCain – will be president, and he wants show host Eddie Sotelo to be the judge. Sotelo agrees.

- Kennedy talks about the fight for immigration reform he waged “and at my side from the beginning was Barack Obama.”

- “Obama’s the one that can unite America to make this and other changes happen. He unites old and young, East and West, to bring change.”

- Sotelo translates his words.

- Kennedy: “Only two senators marched for immigrant rights on May 1, 2006, one in Washington and the other in Chicago. I marched in Washington and Barack Obama marched in Chicago. He was not afraid to stand up when others wouldn’t.”

- Obama has led in health care for children, in education and jobs.

- “Obama will lead the change and I will be there at his side.”

- “70,000 Hispanics have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 11 percent of all the casualties in this war have been Hispanic. The Hispanic youth are patriotic and have served this country.”

- “I’m committed to coming back on the immigration bill and Barack Obama will be with me. He is the one candidate who has said that he can do this in his first term. There’s too many people that are living in the shadows. Men and women of dignity who love their families who love their faith. I’m on their side and Barack Obama is on their side.”

- Sotelo continues translating for his listeners.

- Kennedy pushes his event for Obama with US Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-California) at East Los Angeles Community College, 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. Makes a “personal invitation” to the listeners to attend.

- “I’ll do my best to be there after my show,” says Sotelo.

- Kennedy stresses again that we need Obama to make the changes we want.

- Sotelo begins a series of *** questions (it’s a comedy show) for Kennedy, saying, “Senator, please finish each sentence…”

- “My most embarrassing experience is…?” Kennedy: “Singing ‘Jalisco’ on your radio show. I didn’t sing it with all the technique it deserves. I’ve been practicing. Then he sings a few bars.”

- “My biggest regret is…?” Kennedy: “I haven’t had enough time on the El Piolin radio show.” Says he wants to be a co-host “to improve the ratings.”

- “I have a question for you, Eddie: Will it be the Piolin-Kennedy show or the Kennedy-Piolin show?”

- Sotelo: “Kennedy-Piolin because we really respect you and you’re the greatest senator.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/al-giordano/ted-kennedy-pushes-immigr_b_84314.html
Ted Kennedy was expelled from Harvard for cheating. He left his mistress to die in a frozen river – rather than get her help – because he was worried about his career. The only reason he still in the senate is that he is a Kennedy. There is nothing he could say that I want to hear. Vote for Obama and we will give you amnesty. This is the message that Obama wants Kennedy to sell to Latinos

Is the Universe as old as they say it is?

If you’ve heard the theory that the Universe we reside in is roughly 13.7 billion years old, then try this on for size.

If you’ve seen the show “Universe” on Discovery Channel, this is my point of reference.

During the show, they brought up many interesting points that seemed incredibly logical and all entirely possible. I actually agree that most theories could actually be truth, which would be just incredible. However, the point I’m most concerned with is the point they made about the bubble of perception that surrounds our Earth, which scientists have stated can be and is what is used to date the age of the universe. I’m concerned because later in the episode, they explained that the perception bubble moves with the observer, which means that at any one time you can only see 13.7 billion light years away. This is strange because with this concept, if you are here, and i am 10 billion light years away, i can technically see 10 billion light years the other way at an object 20 billion light years from you, which you wouldn’t be able to see. strange huh?

I do believe the universe is endless, or at least so big it doesn’t matter to us. People who study this field are incredibly logical and intelligent. However, the fact that they base the age of the universe on how far we can see into space doesn’t seem to make any sense.

My theory involves an old theory that when the universe exploded and began expansion, particles were flung out faster than the speed of light. With this, I believe that, in general, the universe is still expanding, and with every unit of measure, the light wavelengths from farther objects expand and expand until they become incredibly red due to red shift. These objects are seen using a radio telescope, or a telescope that picks up radiowaves distant objects that are traveling far and away from us emit. Because the distant objects are universally expanding from a central point, all objects expand from each other no matter what point of reference is taken, as long as that point of reference is moving away from the initial central point that started the expansion. With this idea, and the theory that the perception bubble moves with observer, it’s easy to see that the size of the universe is much larger than we can understand, and it just doesn’t make sense that age should be based on what we can see with a radio telescope.

I don’t know people. I’ve been confused about this for a while. Any thoughts?
for eelfins:

i have heard that, and agree it is a strong point. however, because the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light, it could be that you may never see the light from those distant objects simply because the light emitted is only traveling the speed of light, and will henceforth never reach you.

Its bothering the crap out of me.
Ha. for Chris:

I appreciated your rant, however you answered my question with 2 contradictory points: that everything in the universe is accelerating and that thing you said about time. (i forgot what u said). anyways, glad to see someone else suffering from these impossible questions.

to argue against ur first one, scientests only studied one galaxy, which means the evidence would have been flawed. After all, we are accelerating into the andromeda galaxy as we speak. if the galaxy observed by the scientists is the other way, we could infact be accelerating towrds Andromeda, but away from the galaxy studied. im sure if they had continued researched they wouldve seen some interesting and contradictory results.

The RIAS symphony- what do you know about Geman music during the cold war?

I have a lot of older recordings, and many of them are by the RIAS Orchestra. I looked it up, and it’s a little interesting- it stands for “Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor” or Broadcasting in the American Sector. It was a radio station that became the main avenue for “unbiased” (aka Western) news into East Germany, broadcasted out of West Berlin.

I couldn’t find anything on the orchestra itself, though. What do you know? And specifically, I want to know about the political influences on music during this time. I have no doubt it’s a good orchestra (it’s been great so far), but I suspect its fame may have had as much to do with its political affiliations as its actual quality. What do you think?

And how did music-making work in such a divided city? For example, was the Berlin Philharmonic on the communist side? Is that why so many of these older recordings (from the 50′s) were RIAS?

I haven’t been able to find this stuff. Thanks!
